SOB Advent Calendar- December 2nd - Bitter Harvest!!
Next up we have a beer made by one Tony McNelly- “Bitter Harvest”: a “Basic wheat with an extra bitter punch from a bit more bitter orange than usual.”
This beer was quite highly carbonated, and threw a huge, moussy head! Reminded me of a big snow bank- Very seasonal! Not so carbed as to gush thou- a fine line well walked.
This beer has a wonderful aroma- very much witbeir-like. Sold as “Basic Wheat”, but there is lots of great complexity here! Hard to sort out what is spice and what is yeast-derived. These notes carry through into the taste- coriander, yeast, and, as advertised, tons of bitter orange! There is enough spice, and enough higher alcohols, that the flavor becomes almost hot- spicey- ginger beer-like. For me, this high level of  orange and spice was overwhelming the other flavours, and damaging the complexity and drinkability of this beer. I could tell that this was a very well made beer, but like when you get an extremely well made meal garnished with too much salt and pepper for your liking, I found it challenging to enjoy. Not so my Wife! She prefers, in all things, more spice, more flavor, MORE, to the degree that I often find her meals over-spiced and have begun to suspect that she might be a non-taster. She drank and enjoyed the majority of this one.
In anycase- A very well-made beer! Thank you Tony!!
